sillicate paints fixative 1420.

i am thinking of using this on my victorian soft reds in my fireplace. they are crumbling and dusty and disintegrate when i touch them.

i found this delightful kitchen make over and they used this stuff on their bricks.

this is the sealant (fixative 1420) but its described as a thinner , base hardener thing??

Hi, I'm not expert but if Mike Wye thinks it's Ok then I'd have a lot of confidence in it. So much so that now I have seen that kitchen make-over I might get it to paint on the brick surround to the Aga. I haven't noticed much cooking staining on the bricks (and a bit of brick dust in the food I'm sure only enhances the flavour!) but then again I try to avoid doing any actual cooking. An Aga is for stroking, not cooking! If you go with the sealant could you let us know how you get on?

My thought is lime plaster.

it was lime plastered and i keep trying to convince ms robgil that it would look lovely restored to the way it was but unfortunately she is having none of it.
its not even a pretty fire place if it were to be left exposed. we shall see though , perhaps when the room is clean and decorated she might change her mind.
in the mean time though i still need to try and preserve what is left of these bricks before considering any further and perhaps more drastic action.

Hmmm, a pregnant lady must not be upset.

Several things were instrumental in changing my mind on the lime plaster/ exposed brick conundrum. One was the constant drip feeding of lime propaganda on here. The other was that I read/ realised a lime plastered and painted surface was a lot more hygienic and apparently deters insects (I have colonies of millipedes and their eggs nestled down in my soft crumbling brick), and the final straw was when the huge Womersleys package of paint cards in limewash arrived, no-one could resist those sweetie colours. If you haven't got those samples, I strongly recommend you send off for them as a free instant cheerer-upper.
