Has anyone used silicate paint on a newly lime rendered building? I have new lime render over a clay lump house and want to paint it with something that lasts as long as possible. The silicate paint looks attractive in that sense but am slightly anxious about its chemical reaction component and therefore getting it exactly right. Also not sure how textured it is and whether it may make the lovely lime render look like textured cement!

which unfortunately has no page nos but if you go about 80% down to Redecoration, they cite Keim Granital paint

Dare say it's reassuringly expensive, but compared to the effort you've put in so far, the cost of materials is unimportant.
If ever I get round to stripping the plastic coatings from our house, this will be the paint I'd like to use.
As to texture, I'd phone the maker and ask them.
[Not that I would regard it as suitable for all houses. Substrata such as timber frame which is prone to cracking, needs regular limewash because this will fill and seal the seasonal hairline and edge cracks. I believe silica paint is really meant to be a one-off on relatively stable structures.]

There are two main suppliers: Keim and Beeck. I've dealt with both, and used Beeck on an NHL plinth.
It's a chemical reaction similar to the way carbonation works, but instead of calcium carbonate you end up with calcium silicate which is harder and more resilient. It's pretty much the norm in Germany, I'm told.
The process with Beeck is relatively complex (or it all goes wrong!). There are seven stages, all precisely specified. The hardest part is that you can't stop part way.
I'm pleased with our plinth: it glistens more than limewash would, but since we wanted to match some black finish on the adjoining wall it was an easy decision (black limewash being a faff).

We have used Earthborn silicate paint, which gave a flat look similar to limewash but just not quite... but much better than modern paints form the aesthetic point of view. Reasonably priced for expensive paint, but would still only use on an NHL due to concerns over breath ability.
I used Earthborn silicate paint on our house - not lime render but a cement/lime mix render. Very pleased with the result, it went on fairly easily (3 part process - primer, one diluted coat then undiluted coat) . This stuff isn't textured at all (so contains no grit) , and it's not that thick so it didn't smooth over the slightly rough rendered surface so the surface looks fairly similar to how it started.
The decorator, despite being a "silicate denier" ended up saying that it was very good to work with, "just like normal paint" . The first coat was a bit watery due to the thinning with primer but it filled the hairline cracks itself and the end result is really good
It also has that wonderful effect in that it changes colour (darkens) when wet and then as it dries out it goes back to sandstone again, which is what the bare wall did before painting.
Yes, the paint was "expensive" at ~£400 for the whole system (about £5.80/m2) , but the labour cost to apply it was ~£1000 and if it lasts anything near as long as it should it will pay for itself again and again
I can probably get a close up pic of the finish if that would help

I considered silicate paint but went for limewash. I need some motivation to give the structure a close look and some maintenance more often than once every 15 years. Though mine is timber framed. They reckon limewash will do 5 years.
