We're looking to replace the rotting softwood windows in our Victorian farmhouse with hardwood ones. One quote we have says the windows will arrive painted with two coats of Sikkens Satura basecoat and we will need to paint them with a Sikkens Satura Plus topcoat soon after installation. Does anybody know anything about this paint? Good? Bad? Indifferent? Does it go on easily? Last a long time?

Hardwood... what hardwood? Some hardwoods do not take kindly to being painted.
On our previous house I used the Sikkens oil version of this paint and reckoned it pretty good. Indeed, I still have some in my stock.
I have a prejudice against water-base paints, but as they go the Satura is probably amongst the best
On the new windows I plan to install here I 'll probably be using Demidekk

in the hope that the maintenance cycle will be as they say. Whether it's really any better than the Sikkens, I've no idea.
I say 'probably' because I'm toying with the option of using linseed as it has the advantage that one can apply in direct sunlight, and with a south backing the painting window for conventional paints is pretty short. What may scupper the linseed is that by the time the windows are made, delivered, installed, it may be too late in the year - in cool weather the drying time for linseed is days rather than hours.

It's confusing but I'm sure the 'plus' bit of Sikkens satura means that it's oil based, but a satin finish. I used both the oil based base coat and satura plus topcoat last year on our original pine facia boards. Both went on very nicely, no drips, great finish. Longevity should be as good as Sikkens Gloss, think it suggested a 5 or 8 year maintenance cycle.
I also used the base coat on a previously painted stone sill last Autumn, whoops I've not topcoated it yet, but it looks/seems fine!
