Shelving shape for walk in larder

I am restoring a 4' by 4' walk-in larder and want to recreate the shelving layout typical for a georgian farmhouse. The forum has confirmed my intention of using a slate shelf - thanks. Anyone seen a picture of Georgian larder shelving?

Welcome to the forum pdt. In my Georgian house there was one massive shelf (a hardwood - I've got it still) across the width of the kitchen, but I can't really help you with a larder. i once seen an old larder with a marble shelf , i suspect this was to help keep the food cool?

Our Georgian pantry has a brick plinth about a foot high running along one side, although the size of the bricks makes me suspect that they are a Victorian addition. There are two wooden shelves which I think are original. Each is made from a single plank about 27.5 cm wide, just under 2cm thick and 12'6 long. The end which butts the end wall is square, but the end of the shelf near the door has had the corner rounded. The wood looks to be a close grained pine.

The shelf brackets are unlike anything used today. They are blocks of wood, roughly 3" by 4", built into the wall. They had to be taken out to allow replastering, and it looked as if half-bricks had been knocked out at roughly spaced intervals. The supports were then mortared into place.

The picture shows the underside of the top shelf, which is limewashed. The top has been treated with linseed oil. Sadly, the tins are all empty.

As robgil says above, I understand that marble or slate shelves were principally used for keeping things cool. So I believe that, unless you were very wealthy, you often had just one such shelf for the milk, the butter and so on. The rest of the shelves were wood.

If so, on behalf of the grown-ups on the forum, I apologise. That young Penrose chap set them off.

We'd love to know more (with pictures?) about what you eventually decide to do. It's funny, isn't it, how large these little details can loom in one's mind - it's an affliction that tends to affect period property owners.
