'Shelf life' of casein distemper?

Does anyone know if casein distemper has a short shelf life? I have just re-touched our chimney breast (after jackdaw incursions) with the remains of the same year old can, and the smell is unbelievably awful. It didn't smell particularly bad as I painted it on, but as it dried over a few weeks developed a foul odour. Any ideas about smell and cure? Son compares smell to flatulence!

Boo Hooo! Anyone know how you get distemper off a chimney breast? A scrubbing brush, I suppose. It almost makes me think wistfully of Dulux...

It all depends on your storage conditions. I have been lucky with a couple of tins which were fine after 6 months, through the heat of this summer, but one tin was, as you described - that one had been opened and not sealed down properly and kept in a rather damp shed.
