selling new unwanted house stuff?

We're mostly leaving the new extensions as they are, but the internal doors in them and a few of the internal doors in the old house are these barn door monstrosities. Well, ok not monstrosities, but not particularly to our taste. Because of the distribution of them around the house, if we leave them and fit something else for the remaining internal doors, it will look ridiculous. And as they retail for about £180 each I dont want to pay that for something I don't really like.
So we'd rather take them all out and buy ones from a reclamation yard. They are solid oak with cast iron furniture, 3 brand new still in the wrappers and 5 currently hanging but basically as new.

I know lots of you have sold old materials from renovations, but has anyone sold previous owners' poor (new) choices? I don't think we'd get much for them from a reclamation yard. Ebay?

eBay, if you really want to sell them. I personally reckon you'll get the best price if you sell them individually, in auctions that run concurrently, if you can stand the hassle. If not, sell them as a job lot.

They will go very well on eBay - maybe not to your taste, but they are very popular and can look very good in the right property.

Alternatively, you might find some takers on here :wink:

thank you feltwell, good idea on the concurrent separate auctions. i fear that 'not rushing into decisions' may quickly become 'top-quality procrastination', so i probably won't get around to it for a wee while, but i think that's what we'll try.

Replacing them would be well down my list of priorities and I would have thought they would look ok in any low status rural dwelling. To my eye, the problem with any of the mass-market doors I've seen is that they are a bit too perfect in their finish against the distressed fabric of an old house.

Is it the style you dislike, or the fact that they are pristine reproductions? If it's just the fact that they look too shiny and new, why not distress them a bit? Easier, and much cheaper than selling and replacing! Or you could paint them, which is presumably the finish you would have found on them 100 years ago.

I like the style (each to their own etc) and we have doors like that (tho home made from reclaimed pine) throughout our house.

Anyway, I'm sure they'll sell easily on ebay if that's what you decide to do.

Not to my taste either, but what else can you do in a barn conversion? My friend lives in a converted stable, not a house I'd ever buy but it was an expensive, quite well done conversion with those doors throughout. I think they suit the modernity of the property - it's a kind of new ye olde style which I suppose became possible after the 1930s and all the faux Elizabethan architecture - now we've got ye Tudor barn with black ironmongery, these kinds of doors and exposed brick walls. It doesn't bear much resemblance to interiors in 1500 or 1600 but a lot of people really like the style and it certainly matches comforts like stoves, big range cookers, underfloor heating and double glazing ( the wooden kind Biff makes so nicely).

I'm not a huge fan of them in this house. if it was a barn conversion, i'd have no problem with them. the original part of the house (about half the current house) is a (west) Welsh stone cottage from the late 1900s. It has brand new extensions in a more modern style (big square rooms, fancy-ish modern kitchen). I just think barn doors are a bit of an odd choice. Maybe I'd like them better painted. They don't look too bad in the extensions, but about half of the doorways in the upstairs old house have them and they are definitely odd there.

Anyone got any ideas what sort of internal door would have been common in the original house?

that's what i was thinking. we can get a reasonable deal on a bunch of them, so the idea had been to remove all the barn doors and replace them with a selection of paneled doors. although we might feel slightly better about the barn doors if they were painted white. but then we'd still need to get a bunch of them for remaining doorways. oh god, i have the sinking feeling that we'll never manage to make any decisions about this house at all... at what point does 'taking time not to rush into things' morph into 'endless procrastination'?? :?

Doors - well, if they bother you desperately you'll have to do something! They'd bother me as they'd clash with the antiques and mood I'm creating - if your style is contemporary it's less of an issue. I've spent 4 years procrastinating over one particular empty doorway where the door's been removed by previous owners- it isn't easy to find a door that matches the others and that fits the frame. I think you're going to have a headache to find matching reclaimed doors that fit your frames, and then you're probably going to have to spend a few hundred on the right brass handles, hinges and escutcheons which if you're using reclaimed doors also ought to be 19th C. If you do it though, it will change the mood of the house for the better in my opinion.

I think painting them would soften the look but would also reduce the price you'd get if you were to sell them with the plain finish they have now.
