Hi all, hope everyone is keeping well.
Just wanted to canvass opinions on a minor dilemma please. I'll be insulating one of my lofts before the winter with rolls of sheep's wool, the joists are spaced irregularly between 20cm to 35cm apart and about 70 -90mm deep. As we know the accepted way would be to buy 100mm deep SWI and compress it down flush to the depth of the joist and then 2 layers of 100mm over the top at a right angles to the joists / previous layer.
However, someone local to me is selling some surplus SWI - 570mm wide x 140mm deep - at half the retail price and Just like my dad I can't resist a bargain!! I'm not bothered about the length ways cuts as this would have been unavoidable even with 370mm width SWI, but in terms of depth it probably won't be a good idea to compress 140mm SWI down to the depth of the joists (70-90mm) so I'd be inclined to not compress at all and fill the gaps directly above the joists before proceeding to the next layer. Obviously its best to minimise cuts and gaps so this isn't ideal but does anyone think its a terrible idea? Should I just bite the bullet and buy 100mm depth SWI when the time comes?
Hope this makes sense. I guess this isn't an earth shattering difference, but something like this you only do once.
