I found this programme on the BBC iPlayer this evening - a fascinating account of the history of Camberwell Grove in south London, including the rise of the property conservation movement and the 'dark days' of 1950s modernisation, plus a clip of Barry Bucknell showing how to deal with problems such as 'an ugly old panelled door' by covering it with hardboard - how fashions change!

Well worth watching, though only available for another 29 days.

Sorry for being so behind the times; probably a consequence of not having a TV.
But we bought a 'smart TV' last Christmas and although we haven't troubled it with a dish or aerial connection as yet, it does a good job of connecting to iPlayer and this programme re-run was on the menu this week.

Fascinating programme though. It was quite ironic that the original surviving Georgian houses have now been mostly restored and are sought-after and admired while the 'new concept hi-rise' homes built to replace many of the demolished homes are now demolished themselves after only 40 or 50 years and being replaced with new homes based on the original Georgian designs - a testament to a failed architectural and planning experiment. Let's hope those hard-won lessons will be remembered for a long time and not repeated.
