Secondary double glazing. What to get?

We have been casting around for a solution to the condensation problem in our grade two listed building. We had a look at the Protech DIY type but were rather put off by the fact that the frames, with the hardwood subframe ends up too bulky to fit our frames. The sort of thing that might fit would not have the subframe but be screwed directly to the frames.

I am open to the idea of a diy solution or to getting someone like Anglia to fit them for us. We had a visit from Anglia who said that they hardly ever fit secondary DG these days (It's all plastic full DG ) I would be interested to hear other members views on what they have fitted.

You don't mention whether your house is listed. If it is, then of course your Conservation Officer needs to be consulted on this.

I find some of the simplest and cheapest forms of secondary glazing to be the least visually intrusive. A system like Easyfix, for example: http://www.secondaryglazingdiy.co.uk/

But whatever you finally choose, I think the only unequivocal opinion I would express is to avoid "clashing" glazing bars. Either ensure that the secondary glazing bars run in line with the primary, or that the secondary glazing has none.

Joking aside, Penners is, of course, quite right. I would also add the obvious point that secondary DG won't do anything about the interior humidity that is causing the condensation, just reduce its condensation on cold windows in favour, perhaps, of other cold spots. That's no reason not to install secondary DG for insulation purposes, just something to bear in mind.

We only have condensation problems on the windows and that is what we hope to cure with the secondary DG. What we would like is sliding units so that we can easily ventilate the place. We have had plastic Sec. DG for 30 years and it is now worn out. What we would like to do is upgrade.
