Sealing stove windows *LINK*

We have a solid fuel stove with glass windows. The gaskets which are meant to seal the windows tend to break up, leak and are expensive to replace - they are white flat affairs, not the rope type.
S****f*x and others sell a silicone sealant which will resist temperatures up to 300 deg. C
Will this be adequate for the job?

What sort of stove have you got? I recently replaced the glass seals on my Morso Squirrel - the first time in 6 years of frequent use. I used the flat white ceramic fibre seal that you descibe which cost just a couple of pounds from the local stove man. I think it would be hard to get a neat job using heat resistant silicone. I haven't used the stuff so I can't say if it would take the heat, but my gut reaction would be to avoid it. If nothing else it could be hard to remove if it fails.

I have no idea how effective a silicone seal may be here - however, the DIY sheds do sell now a remover/solvent for the stuff. No idea of how effective that is as I haven't used it. In general it's meant to remove the sealant from bathrooms I think.

The flat white tape stuff is pretty cheap if you buy it by the metre, I agree.

I used some of that red sealer stuff at he weekend on the exact same thing - the window and it filled my house up with buring plastic smell for 6 hrs!!!!! I then let it set and picked it off

Dont use it, I got some fire rope at 2.50 per m with peal off stick and it worked much better. #

My curtains still smell

Is this lack of stickability by any chance allied to the failure of capillary action which Johneds raised (ooh er missus...) in another thread?

The problems started about the same time it was declared that rising damp doesnt exist, I have tried the nice people who sell v1aGrA (strange chemical symbols!) but they seem not to be able to help. I am currently waiting for a response from a fakir who promises he can make it firm enough for people to climb!

But seriously... is there such a thing as fire rope glue?
