Scone Palace Archway

The archway at Scone Palace which was destroyed by a van in 2010 has been rebuilt. See http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-tayside-central-20462667.

I hope the vans insurers paid for it! You have to wonder how the driver thought it would get through that.

This was mentioned at the time in http://www.periodproperty.co.uk/forum/viewtopic.php?f=1&t=11555&p=147954 but I thought I'd start a new thread as that one drifted very quickly...

They've made an excellent job of it but it can never be called a 16th C arch anymore though.

I was involved in the repair work to Uppark after the disastrous fire there and made all the rainwater pipes including two drops of pipes that were intended to be put in when the house was built but for some reason they weren't.

All of the pipes were new but the house is feted as being restored to 'as it was' the day before the fire... In my view the existing pipes were serviceable and I could have repaired them all including those that were filled with the molten lead flowing from the gutters. Although much play is made about how salvage/conservation squads saved things from the fire the pipes were taken down and strew haphazardly in the grass around the house where they were promptly fattened by lorries, diggers dumpers and uncle Tom Cobly and all. :roll: They were not beyond repair even then but the 'fast track' type contract that the repairs were carried out under meant, I believe, that new was to be used until AI's (architects instructions) were issued to the contrary. Nobody cares about rainwater pipes..sob

Arch 1 Van 0 I'd say!

The arch looks considerably better now than the van did, which from that 2nd picture looks like it snapped it's chassis in the impact.

Maybe so, but look at it from the stonemasons point of view, cost of old van = a few quid

2 years work during difficult economic times = priceless

They had to eat all the kit kats that were in the van before it could be moved!

OK....I think I'm beginning to understand the kit kat joke. That is only because 6 months in and I have not yet decided on a floor for the hall and kitchen.

It'll look good as old in no time. I'd defy anyone who didn't know (or hadn't seen the photo on the nearby information board) that the only Roman gate arch still used by traffic in England isn't all that Roman any more...
