Scaffolding near overhead electrical supply

In anticipation of the granting of my LBC to remove the paint from our house, I am looking into the access. I have my own scaffold tower, but foresee a problem with the overhead electrical supply (which connects to a termination plate on the front of the house). Spoke with EDF and they told me it needs to be shrouded - The problem is that although this is free, there is no guarantee on timing (said it could take 10 weeks!).

Anyone else in Norfolk have experience of how long shrouding takes?

When I enquired about this in Cornwall, they turned up with all the gear a couple of days later. Unfortunately, I had to tell them to go away again as I had just enquired about the need and didn't actually need them for a while (*).

We had exactly this issue when I started on our roof, but it turned out that shrouding was not necessary because the cables from the telegraph pole to the house were insulated and armoured. The EDF chap that came out to check on my request for shrouding explained that cables to a house should always be fully protected as standard and no additional protection should be necessary - think about householders painting and doing other maintenance work up a ladder.

Shrouding is generally only required for work near the bare cables that run between telegraph poles, which will depend on the layout of things around the property.

It might be worth having a chat with the chap in the field who organises such works. I found him to be wonderfully helpful and he eventually arranged to have the two poles in our garden removed and the cables rerouted underground, all at no cost (I dug the trench though). If it turns out that you do need shrouding though, I was told that they can shorten the timescale to within a month (I think)for £250, but even then they couldn't give me an actual date because (they said) they schedule the work when doing other local works.

In my experience it only takes a few days after the request. That is based on a sample size of 1, your mileage may vary!

Saying that I'd be very surprised if the cables weren't insulated anyway. Ours are, but they still put some nice yellow shrouding on. It makes it look the part and made it easier to see so you stepped over the cable when walking round the scaffold!
