Edinburgh’s Old Town not Loneliest Place in UK
The ongoing SOOT Campaign against the controversial Caltongate development defies latest claims on Edinburgh being one of loneliest places to live, say some of its supporters in response to a report published by Sheffield University today,
Internationally renowned Architect Ian Begg who worked with the late Robert Hurd in the conservative surgery redevelopment of The Canongate in the 1950s, said today:
“The Save Our Old Town campaign is doing a very fine job. To have such strong community effort is exceptional, particularly with all these financiers and their servile minions clambering over the city trying to rip off as much as possible, caring nothing for the community, or the history and quality of the Old Town ”
SOOT campaigner Sally Richardson who lives in Morocco Land on The Canongate, part of Beggs work said “Of course many things have changed since these flats were built, including the community, but there is still a strong sense of belonging here, something the council and developers Mountgrange hadn’t banked on”
She added “We are looking forward to welcoming Ian and also respected conservation architect James Simpson to our meeting tomorrow evening, where we shall be discussing recent events such as the UNESCO visit and having a festive drink”
