The full blooded Victorian Gothic building facing the Station Hotel across Orchard street belongs to an institute important in the history of Tyneside but not well known beyond it. The NEVILLE HALL 1862-72, is the offices and library of the North of England Institute of Mining and Mechanical Engineers (known as the 'Mining Institute'). It was designed by A M Dunn for the Coal Owners' Association on behalf of the Insititute, and built of Prudham sandstone banded with red, with griffins adorning the pilasters which flank each gabled dormer. (The griffins have been removed, two of them up the hill to no. 271 Westgate Road.) The amphitheatre inside is a 1902 alteration of some splendour by Cackett and Burns Dick. The Institute's WOOD MEMORIAL LIBRARY is Romanesqe, with an arched and glazed roof, and contains a seated marble statue of Nicholas Wood by Wynn.

Next to it is the home of Newcastle's LITERARY AND PHILOSOPHICAL SOCIETY, which was founded in 1793. This Neo-Grecian building is of 1822-5 by John Green; three bays, two and a half storeys, entrance with Greek Doric columns in antis, the first one and a half storeys with giant pilasters, then a Doric frieze and pediment. Alterations and extensions, not visible from the street, were made in 1888-9 by AR Gibson, who copied Green's internal details. The glass-domed roof was done by FW Rich after a fire in 1893. Inside, among many interesting sculptures, a statue of James Losh by Lough.

The cheerfully Baroque Bolbec Hall, next door, was designed by Rich in 1907-9 for the Lit and Phil to let speculatively.

Apologies for the c***py website for the Lit&Phil - the new one is ready to go but we are in a bit of limbo whilst one is closed down and the other replaces it - one is an old home-made site the new one's professionally done.
"Any day now" was the answer when I asked when the new one would be up and running.

(You will be able to link through to Amazon from it, thereby contributing with every purchase to keeping this 2013 year old Society and it's 1825 Grade 2* building going.....)

But yes a good cause - hope that there is a full house, Adam is donating his time etc (travelling from London) so if VERY cheap wine is served and all make a 'donation' to the cost of a ticket hopefully the Lit and Phil coffers will swell a little.

If anyone has any means of publicising the evening further I am sure that notices can be sent...

Yes - a sell out, which raised a great deal of money for SAVE as BB gave his time for nothing.

A very nice man! In fact I gave him my Great Western Railway badge so he could show his support for the SAVE Span Four campaign.

I think that the wine after may have had something to do with that...

Hm, I doubt that even with a great deal of care it will last that long - sorry for that.
I was going to put 200+ but decided to use the correct age and gave the age of the Societyn not its building - Society founded 1793, Building erected 1825 designed by Ben Green specifically for us, badly damaged by fire 1893 - what a way to celebrate your birthday!
Foundation line is just on the edge of Hadrian's Wall (southern side)
We have ghosts, but not Roman, although one was C16th ish.
I can't think of a nicer place to haunt.....

It was still there on Thursday - although there's a large banner on it for a demolition firm so we can live in hope it disappears very soon!

What a monstrosity it is.
