This one has been a long-standing concern of mine, as the place is empty and increasingly unloved, there have been various schemes for re-use including as a concert hall, but as the town already has one in the splendid Town Hall that seemed not too great a plan.
Eventually permission has been given for conversion into housing, so if anyone has deep pockets and is so inclined...
Sad that the two terracotta griffins have vanished from the gateposts, maybe they are somewhere for safekeeping; two still stand guard over the roof however.

Alston was used extensively for the TV adaptation of 'Oliver Twist' a few years' ago. Smashing little town.
