Satellite broadband

Has anyone got satellite broadband or any ideas what I should be searching for?
Our 'new' house is very remote it's on the side of a mountain,there is no telephone,TV or internet at present.
we do have electricity but we are installing a hydro turbine.Being in Wales we have more than enough water running through the 2 streams on our land to power our house & workshop
I'm also hoping to renovate the original 16C farmhouse which is in the yard as a holiday cottage so this is why I'm in need of some sort of internet connection for bookings etc.

Same here, similarly placed in Wales but not quite so remote.
My cynical thought is it is only available in areas that don't need it

I have come up with an alternative!
Pop down the mountain to the local pub for a pint of real ale and the use of their internet...weather permitting :idea:

I think you'll find it depends on how "rural" the government defines the post code area, and how poor your existing internet service is. This then affects how much the satellite connection fee is subsidised by Gov. Without the subsidy, and with competition from other technologies, satellite broadband is pretty expensive/uncompetitive, so the company won't bother.

I see Tooway dishes a lot on my travels around rural Scotland and I believe they cover all of Europe.

I used one for a week to tele-commute from a cottage we rented. It was usable but very far from being a fluid experience. I'd consider it the last gasp option really, both technology-wise and cost-wise. I was resigned to getting it for our new-build on Harris but looks like BT have done a massive amount of finger-pulling-out recently and 'fibre' is now a possibility.

A far better option would be to find someone near-ish who can get conventional service and persuade them to let you share via a radio link. With higher gain antennas and clear line of sight relatively cheap radios like those from Ubiquiti should be capable of transmitting for many miles. I've done this on a small scale to connect two buildings together and its pretty bullet proof. Maybe the pub could help?
