Sash Window - Painting

hello Forum,

I'm on the lookout for a decorator to paint 7 box-sash
windows before winter (i'm too scared to go up a ladder

has anyone had their sash's painted by a painter/decorator?
and if possible could anyone tell me how much I'd be looking to
pay for these to be; stripped > prima > undercoat & glossed?

A rough idea would be great!

Depends on the size of the windows and the access considerations.

If the painter/decorator is a professional company, rather than an odd-job man, they will insist on scaffold. You may find that in the long run, purchasing your own tower (for this sort of job and to enable you to conduct your own repairs) may be economical.

Without more info it's difficult to price, but I would suggest the following:

Small window -

remove sashes, sand & prime, inside & out = .5 day
2 top-coats + any reputtying required, re-install sash = 1 day

Large window-

remove sashes, sand & prime, inside & out = .5 - 1day
2 top-coats + any reputtying required, re-install sash = 1.5 days

Obviously, painting without removing the sashes reduces the cost, as does painting the exterior only. You can get the windows painted much more quickly (and therefore cheaply) if you desire, but I tend to find that a quality job last longer and takes time

yep - sounds good, thanks for the info.

the windows are in good condition so they wont need removing,
just need some tlc in the paint department.
there are 5 larger windows and 1/2 smallers ones.

Removing was not for repairs....but to paint the sashes properly. If your decorator doesn't remove the sashes, you run the risk that they will become painted shut, stick or start rotting in unpainted areas you can't see.

I got mine Ventrolla'd so I could take them out and paint them all over whilst they were indoors and on the floor so easy to reach (I don't even doo high stepladders) although they make the floors too low nowadays as well.
Trouble is they can be somewhat heavy and I chickened out of it.
