sash window fittings?

Hi, does anyone know of anywhere i can source traditional fittings for my sash windows? I've come accross: www.reddiseals.com which looks ok. Any others? Also wondering about using beading with the weatherpile...hs anyone got any experience with this, ie; is it worth the draught proofing?

Someone here recommended these people a while ago and I bookmarked the site. http://www.broughtons.com/index.php. I havn't had cause to use them but a friend of mine did and was full of praise. She wanted a nice brass flap to cover the inside of her letterbox to replace the piece of plastic that had been there about 10years!

I've used the Reddiseals products and they're fine. The weatherstrip doesn't just stop the draughts, it also makes the window slide a lot easier.

You would hope that after repair your window would slide more easily in any event, but certainly on the ones I've done so far the brushpile weatherstrip does seem to make a real difference - the windows glide up and down very smoothly, better than any sash I've come across without the brushpile. New sash pulleys with ball bearings made a difference as well, my original Victorian ones were the plain bush type and were well worn & past their best.

As for fittings - I ended up getting some from Mightons, as Reddiseals didn't have all I want. For the main visible fittings such as sash catches, my originals were OK - which is good as many of the ones sold look far too new & shiny to my mind.

Broughtons, as Lady A says, do some lovely stuff - very nice indeed, in my opinion their items look more in keeping to an old house than the shiny, lacquered brass fittings that so many other places sell. You do pay for it though - £58 for an unlacquered sash fastener??? :shock:

I've just spotted they do a hinged sash lift as well - I've never seen or heard of these before, but they look perfect if (like me) you are fitting secondary glazing and normal sash lifts project too far:-

I always wondered how people got those URL's on here where it looks like a normal word, but click on it and it takes you to the relevant site.

Probably doesn't help that I'd always read that as Tin Yurl (some sort of Cornish sport perhaps?) rather than Tiny URL

Joiner, I like and use Mighton but find that some of their products may work well but don't look appropriate - such as the replacement flappy plastic parting beads:-

Feltwell – agree about the plastic parting beads. I used them once a few years ago and haven’t used them since, my objection being that they are actually not as smooth running as you’d expect from plastic, despite the ‘anti-friction runners’. The same goes for the staff bead with the standard weatherstrip, although if you’re going to retain an old sash with a lot of slack in its running the standard weatherstrip staff bead does work well to take up that slack, but it will wear off a line of paint in time!

The other excellent use for the standard weatherstrip (page 32 of Mighton’s current catalogue) is to seal the underside of the bottom rail on a sash. Run the pile-carrier cutter along the bottom of the bottom rail and fit the standard weatherstrip into the slot, it recesses the strip to leave just the tip to make the seal and stop water ingress and draughts. Treat and paint the slot before knocking in the strip.

I used the plastic parting bead on just the one job, replacing 13 d/g upvc windows with wooden d/g sliding sashes (using spiral balances) on a house in a conservation area. Put simply, the CO was concerned only with the external look of the job because she’d agreed to retain double-glazing and it was being done under BC and so had to conform to Regs.

The CO oversaw the job because it had been awarded a grant under the old HERS (Heritage Economic Regeneration Scheme, match-funded by EH), the rules having been bent somewhat because no local businesses were taking up the offer of a grant and unused funding would have been lost. It was therefore argued that domestic properties could be included because by improving the local architectural environment new businesses would be attracted to the area. Hmmmm.

I had mixed feelings about that!

Cost of the job? £11,500.

Grant? 70%.
