I used that product to remove paint from a heavily embossed decorative tile I found at a reclaim yard. With a cold pressure washer it took very heavy blasting & 3 rounds with the stripper to get all the paint out of the detail.
I'd definitely go down the route of hiring a hot pressure washer. It will be an incredibly messy job however - even doing my little 12" x 12" tile led to spraying paint-coloured gunge all around it. Not sure how you could do it without creating a huge mess.

i think a large tarp between the wall and the rest of the world with me and the pressure washer in-between , the gable end of the house will be a problem though as its in someone elses garden. Could Sandtex be burnt off do you think? Although the fumes might not be all that pleasant i guess. i shall try a small section of wall and see how i go with a scrubbing brush and a bucket of hot soapy water first.
Its not a job that i have to do straight away however all the render has cracked and i have a funny feeling that its had the odd cement repair here and there , do you think another winter would do it any harm? Or perhaps a job like this is best left to a cooler part of the year anyway?

My mistake, it's actually NB 410...not 510. 410 stinks of ammonia and is strong enough to make your eyes water when applying.
Hot water makes a huge difference....your can use a scrubbing brush and warm soapy water, but if you have a large area it will take ages. The comments about mess are spot on. Although don't be tempted to wait until it gets colder....the stripper doesn't work as well in cold weather.

ive just done a few test patches , it doesnt half make a mess eh? the stripper worked ok but it did leave gunk underneath , this came off ok with a scrubbing brush and hot soapy water. underneath was another pink masonry paint and underneath that looks to be a yellow lime wash , i am going to strip the masonry paint off and see how it comes off although i am pretty sure with limewash underneath it should come off quite easily.
the walls have been patched with cement along cracks and i have even found some mastic , someone really wanted to seal this house up nice and tight.

right then , the stripper couldnt remove the other layer of paint , luckily though it scraped off very easily.

does this look like cement based render to you guys? the house should have chalk based render and not a sand based one. from the inside i can still see the chalk based render in places where it was squidged through the laths so this is a repair patch i think. this particular piece has blown , its a large patch with a crack all the way around about 3/4 sq meter.
Ive done a few test patches and each one is the same. its just that when the time comes that i strip all the paint off i need to be prepared to repair the render before lime washing.
this patch has been repaired around the crack with a rubbery cement type substance but its cracked again.

It looks a lot like the render on our house; stiff and brittle cement render on a timber-framed building that will move with the seasons. Something's got to give and the cement render is doing what cement render does - crack.
I wouldn't worry too much about the cracks in the render but I might worry about what's happening to the timbers underneath if the render is letting in and trapping water. Hopefully, your nice big thatch overhang has been keeping most of the rain off the walls.
If you only have patches of cement render then you might want to consider removing them and replacing with a more appropriate render. Actually, if you only have patches of cement render then you're lucky.

Thats the thing FF , i dont know what percentage of the render is cement. With the modern or relatively modern windows and doors in place i would say quite a bit of it is cement render. My main worry is opening a big can of worms if i remove it. As far as i can see the worst that can happen is the need to put in new laths , if the render has blown then i take it the laths have rotted. I do know that some of the infils between the studs at the front of the house are brick as i can see them from inside however i have no idea if the studs are in good condition or not , i can only see them from the inside.
Also , what percentage can i 'repair' before building control gets involved? If i had to repair most of it could i do it in small sections so that at no one time would i be repairing more than bc would let me without making me do all sorts of silly things like *insulate etc etc?

The rules get tighter on the target U values in October 2010 but the basic rules continue to apply - repairs to less than 25% and it's "reasonable" to do nothing, more than that and it's not. I presume that work on less than 25% is not considered notifiable, but I wouldn't be sure without a call to Building Control.robgil said:

How long you should take to repair before considering it needs another repair would be a matter of interpretation I would expect. I somehow doubt that repairing one defect, stopping for a bit then repairing a second defect that was apparent at the beginning would be taken as within the spirit of the rules. Only you can assess your likelihood of 'getting caught' doing that. A lot depends on if you're already doing other notifiable work and are being regularly inspected. However should your local BCO be unfriendly in the extreme then you might end up being forced to remove your "repairs" and rework the whole wall complete with insulation to bring your existing wall down from the probable current U value of 2(ish) to the target of 0.35.
If you need to repair the whole wall then I would at least specify and cost insulation so you know where you're going - the cost difference may not be as extreme as you imagine and you will save money on fuel for the foreseeable future.
And to my mind that first photo looks like a cement render - you could chip a bit off and send it for analysis, but as you know it needs to be replaced I wouldn't waste the time or money.

Has come off well on the main house...although there is some limewash underneath, this is not a problem as will either limewash over this or use silicate.

This section has lower courses of brick (which have stripped okay), with a lime rendered clay lump above. I am holding off stripping the render until I am ready to re-render in one go. The whole extension is being lime rendered, so we don't have to worry too much about damage to the render when removing the paint
This is the flint section (well a small sample of it). Paint removal here is proving to be a problem....don't want to damage the pointing. Considering a render here to enable a limewash or silicate finish.
