Just found out the house we are buying has been painted with Sandtex on top of lime mortar. I'm assuming this is very bad (despite the Sandtex website saying it is breathable AND waterproof). I find it odd they understood about lime mortar and then coated it in Sandtex. Am I wrong to be worried and think we would need to get it off? (I dont think I am - and it's going to cost a bit to get it off I assume - good £3-5K?)

Are you sure you weren't looking at the gore-tex website! I have no idea. Isn't sandtex plastic paint? If so it would trap water behind it if there are any cracks or the like just like any other plastic paint.

If Sandtex are lying when they claim the product is waterproof and breathable then why haven't trading standards, advertising standards or someone taken action?

It's a good idea to remove the paint. Masonry paint doesn't tend to stick to lime mortar very well and pulls off and cracks. Then the lime sucks in lots of water and the paint doesn't let the water out again.
I had mine removed by a firm using using Strippers of Sudbry chemicals and a hot water doff pressure washer system. I did a bit myself to begin with but never again - it is a horrible job.
