Sand blasting

Hi

I have salvaged an old high level toilet cistern from our outside loo which I want to re-use in our new indoor cloakroom. It is the old cast iron type (embossed writing on front etc) but needs restoring to its former glory. There are layers of old paint and rust that need to be removed but there does not appear to be any holes/broken parts etc.

Can anyone recommend a local tradesman in Hampshire (near GU52) who would carry out the necessary work as I can't find anyone to do it.

Has anyone done a similar job? Is there anything I should be aware of before restoring the cistern?!?

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Yes, be careful of hidden hairline cracks being exposed during the cleaning up job. That is the only one I know, others will think of more.

I can't help with anything local to Hampshire but on a general note, vehicle restorers often use shot-blasting to clean up engine parts prior to repainting, so that might be an area to investigate rather than 'antique' restorers.

I've also heard about a less harsh method of blasting that is sometimes used on more delicate parts - known as soda-blasting.

I've never used such methods but there's loads of info available via Google and I'm sure you could find a local firm to talk to about your particular requirement. Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Whatever method of de-rusting you choose, be careful to avoid any degradation of the embossing on it. That's (I imagine) what gives it its character.
