And another question----

The thatched roof to our 'nearly ours' cottage has a sand and cement collar flashing to the chimney. This was done in 2001/2 as part of re-ridging.

Being a complete, but fast learning novice with thatch, my question is: Is sand and cement an acceptable finish?

It's a widely used technique, Joss. And from the look of the photo, yours is in good nick. Provided you have no problems with damp getting in around the chimney stack, I should leave it well alone.

You certainly don't want to go disturbing that nice thatch, or having people clambering about on it, unless it's absolutely vital.

If it ain't broke, don't fix it!

Agree it does look in good order, just nice to have a second opinion.

I have at last been able to speak to the Thatcher who did the new ridge, and have been well briefed about the roof, and understand what's going on.

Everything is falling onto place nicely now.

Thanks to all who have answered my queries, I just wish that my reference books, of which I have plenty, had not been put into store! Never in a month of sundays believed that we would end up with anything other than Georgian!
