Salvo Fair this weekend

For those near enough to Knebworth,the annual Salvo Fair starts with Trade Day tomorrow (Friday), with public admitted Saturday and Sunday.

If you have not been before, it is an eclectic mix of Architectural Salvage for sale or at Auction (Saturday) - with reduced price entry to Knebworth House when you have exhausted the stalls.

Didn't buy anything, have either got it, didn't need it or too expensive! But amongst the usual imported decorative goods were some good genuine salvo stands displaying flooring, bricks, tiles etc and plenty of opportunity to talk to the Retailer and find out what they can source and supply. I was very intrigued by the amount of slavo from churchyards and churches-- metal grave markers, plenty of metal flower holders and railings :shock: . I was however, very tempted by Beyond France ltd, they had some gorgeous European vintage handspun linen, in particular Hungarian Linen. Quite rugged but very chic,plus some monogrammed white linen. Worth a look. The usual locks, keys, bolts, knockers and door furniture were in plentiful supply and an impressive display of bathroom stuff from Ivybridge.

I'm guessing that's because of the Elfin'Safety obsession with laying headstones down in Victorian graveyards, to stop any danger of them falling on anyone. Cheaper than making them secure standing upright, and I guess the flower holders and railings are then without purpose. It's a horrible practice, totally spoils the graveyard.

The church a few doors down from me went one stage further - all the headstones were moved to the edge and secured to the graveyard walls, leaving a plain grass field. The council then stuck "no ball games" notices all over it, so except for the church fete once a year there is a useless, plain field to mow. :roll:

I like the Churchyards that leave the headstones and allow a wild flower meadow to grow up around them.

I think that most churchyards which are closed for burials have been handed over to the local council to maintain, so it's probably not the church which did this. I really don't know what the justification was, as all councils only want to not spend money.

The church opposite my house has had some awful things done by the Town Council, including cutting down trees in a conservation area as they seemed to think that the rules didn't apply them! More importantly, they have done things like use old gravestones to pave up to the edge of the (Grade 1 listed) church building, which has exacerbated the damp problem inside as the floor is below the ground level...
