Salvage yard closing down auction

This yard isn't far from me, I've always found it to be very expensive, perhaps why it's now having a closing down auction? Who knows!

Anyway, there are a lot of lots, ranging from:-

- Bricks, roof tiles, beams, doors, windows
- Sanitaryware
- Garden statues, including some that wouldn't be out of place at the entrance to your local stately home!
- a blue plastic heron
- a bird bath made by Tommy Walsh of The Reclaimers* - not sure if that's meant to increase or decrease the value.....

If you've the stamina then there are 30-odd pages of auction catalogue to wade through. Could be some good deals if you've the patience!

Thanks Feltwell.....I had already seen this on thesaleroom.com and bookmarked a few lots as we will be in need of certain replacement items for our current restoration

As long as it's not like the last architectural salvage yard closing down auction we attended in Dorset in 2013 - I went home with our new puppy, leaving Pip instructions to bid on a rather splendid fireplace and a couple of other choice items, such as a vintage clock for DS......unfortunately he got distracted talking to a friend and came close to missing the clock, but at the last moment heard the lot number called and hastily put in the winning bid of £10. When he went to pay for his successful bids he was surprised to discover he'd actually won three stone paving slabs - the next lot after the clock :roll:

Never did find a use for those and left them for our buyers when we sold last year :lol:

Don't suppose you can recommend any other good salvage yards around the Shrewsbury area? Whoops, apologies Feltwell, I have just seen your response to my query on PP's thread - many thanks!

What sort of items are you after Mims?

Not so much around Shrewsbury, but there are some very reasonably priced, but down-at-heel, yards around the West Midlands for building materials. I got a very good deal on a large quantity of reclaimed bricks from Gardiners in Stoke on Trent, for example. Their old yard really was grotty - they've moved to better premises now I believe. There are bigger yards such as Cawarden near Cannock, but they are pricey - although Cawarden was the only place able to match some particular bricks for me.

If it's less building materials, more interior odds and ends and fittings, then the Dog House in Walsall is worth a look, although I haven't been there in some time. A good place for a rummage!

What sort of items are you after Mims?

Mainly fireplaces - we need at least three (for bedrooms) and possibly a timber surround or two, but we are quite specific in our requirements ie, we want Art Nouveau/Arts & Crafts as these are our preferred style and will suit the *makeover* our Victorian house underwent in the 1920s :roll: We also need some flagstones for a hallway and door furniture.....oh, and anything else that catches our eye, lol :lol:

Ebay, a good deal of patience and some travelling, rewarded me in the end with a complete set of fireplaces matched to my one remaining original one - and was a lot cheaper than most salvage dealers.

I too loved this salvage yard but also found it overpriced even with my discount from knowing the lad that works there

Ebay, a good deal of patience and some travelling, rewarded me in the end with a complete set of fireplaces matched to my one remaining original one - and was a lot cheaper than most salvage dealers.

Oh yes, ebay is my personal favourite stomping ground......we've been buying/selling there for twelve years (we have a registered business, but not antiques :wink: ) and between us Pip and me have around 14000 feedback Were you to do a *head count* of our possessions (house contents wise, that is), I'd say a good seventy five percent originate from ebay.....

As I mentioned on another thread, we think nothing of travelling ridiculous distances for the perfect ebay find - in fact only the second item we ever bought was a Liberty sideboard, believed to be a custom order, possibly by Shapland and Petter that has recently been valued at a five figure sum :shock:

I was most insulted when telling a neighbour once how we had furnished the majority of our 3500 sq ft house with ebay finds and he remarked "yes, you can certainly pick up stuff no-one else wants there for peanuts, can't you?" - especially as we'd just paid a couple of grand for a rather nice Arts & Crafts bookcase that was right in front of him as he spoke :twisted:

Trouble is, Pip prefers shopping *in the flesh* so to speak, and enjoys the thrill of the chase - whether that be antique fairs, shops or salvage yards, whereas I'm more lazy and would rather be sat snuggly indoors with the whole panoply of what the Internet offers at my fingertips, lol :lol:

To save anyone else the trouble I will share the fact that there are no elephant related items, none at all that I could see. Which is probably just as well since I don't have means to retrieve anything..... Although I do currently have sitting in a fellow PPUK'ers home in London 4 rather splendid antique blue and white plates ( 3with elephant designs ) that I bid on from the other side of the world and were very kindly collected for me.

I wouldn't worry yourself about that, nobody wanted a Van Gogh painting when he was doing them.

I happily admit to the vast amount of our possessions coming from eBay.

I'm currently hunting for a nice oak court cupboard or big dresser. Sadly, I look down the pictures and every time I think oooooh that one's nice, it's always the £2k one not the £200 one. Annoyingly, the properly old ones are a lot taller than the "modern" ones.

I'm starting to think evil thoughts about people who paint furniture. Great idea with pine, bad idea with a nice original campaign chest of drawers.
