Sad day

We've had a sad day here today. Our 12 year old daschund Solly had to be put down this evening. After surviving a serious back injury and operation two years ago we were looking forward to a long life together. Unfortunately the big C had other ideas. We had no idea, thinking the symptoms may be linked to his back but the vet told us otherwise last week. We found a nice place in the garden for him. Just a shame it was pouring with rain. In the end he was 100% perfect with the fluffs and even used to share food with them. He had to bark at them to get them to move out of the way so he could get in the back door. He will be sorely missed.

Oh, I'm so sorry. You must be feeling grim. You have my sympathies. The loss of a loved animal is so sad. Remember him with love. And look after yourselves. It's tough on you too. Be kind to yourselves. He had the best of parents, the best of friends. Be proud, be sad, recall the good times.

Thank you all for your nice comments. We did sprinkle wild flower seeds over the grave for the summer but will put something more permanent there in the autumn. Had to protect the area because the fluffs probably won't show any respect and will just scratch up the seed :roll:. If you ever want a good example of how life goes on, just watch chickens!

I'm sorry to hear that tobydog. We get so attached to our pets don't we?

I lost my boxer Rory who lived until he was ten and he came with me everywhere when I was working, sitting in the front seat of the van. We were devastated when we had to have him put down and he was buried in his basket with his food and water bowls with him. I wonder what Time Team will think of that in years to come?

I've got a lump in my throat just typing this...

Dear tobydog im so sorry to hear your very sad news,pets become such a major part of the family ,some of us treat them like children.My Staffordshire bull terrier even has pyjamas because i'm worried that he feels the cold at night!
Treasure your fond memories of him, it sounds like he had a lovely life with you.x

Thanks again for the kind words. Solly is also in his basket with his favourite toy. Sarah and I have always had dogs in our respective families but I've never had to be part of making the final call before. My parents have always done that and I've not been there. With Solly it was the right call at the right time but it's so tough right now. Time to move on and thanks again for your support which really does help.

You must have a new pet as soon as possible. You can't replace them, but loving a new member is very healing xx

It's a sad fact that our dogs just don't live as long as we do. So from the very day that we acquire them, we dog lovers have to accept that our much-loved friends will leave us sooner or later.

However, between those events are been many years of mutual companionship, enjoyment and devotion. I'm sure you'll agree that this makes the pain of loss more than worthwhile.

May I ask Doug, how well this worked out for you? Was he a worry and a distraction for you while you were working? How did you manage in extreme cold or extreme heat? Did you ever manage to take him in to jobs, or was he OK to spend all day in the front of the van? I ask because I would so love to have a dog, and would want to manage it in exactly this way, but would often be too busy to keep popping out to check on the dog...
