Rug cleaning

Has anyone had a Persian type rug cleaned? If so, then what sort of price is charged? Presumably it is per square metre?
I am considering buying a nice Pakistani rug 12ft by 9ft which is for sale at a good price, but it does need cleaning, which I am guessing might make a big difference to the final price if it is done professionally

Alternatively, is this something we can do ourselves? When I searched on the web, I found pictures of lots of foaming detergent and plastic scrubbing brushes, which doesn't look too hitech to me ...

If it is any use you are welcome to borrow my vax carpet cleaner - works with water, detergent and a lot of noise. Doesn't make pub carpets clean and sparkly but helped with the smell. Might be worth a shot on a rug.

Thanks Malcolm I will bear that in mind for the future. We have decided not to buy that particular rug so not needed at the moment
