Replace a beautiful thatched cottage with a 'footballers wife' house, add your £3m price tag, and watch whilst it doesn't sell. When you look in the 'about us'/'our story' section you'll find it hard to sympathise with them, when you see what they destroyed........

At the very least, with 7 acres to play with you would have thought that the cottage could have remained and the house built elsewhere on the plot........

Leaving aside all the questions over the design and size of house and demolition of the old cottage, that must have been a hell of a lot of work for the family concerned. 2 small kids in a caravan can't be much fun long term either, as I know one or two of the forum members know!

No, that must have been pretty hellish! One gets the impression the money ran out and the debts ran up. Have to say, I quite like the interior, although a bit minimalist its all done to a very high spec and lots of lovely green oak, but just struggling with the loss of that lovely cottage!

For a modern house, it looks pretty good to me. Far better than the majority of new-builds thrown up by the 'big boys' or many of the modernistic projects on Grand Designs - but that's just a matter of personal taste of course. I like the idea of a £278.15p annual gas bill though!

Yes, shame about the original cottage, but I would bet that was a planning permission issue.

I too quite like the house and I don't blame the owners for the removal of the cottage...presumably it required planning consent and this was granted. We can't have it both ways, either people should follow LBC and planning law or they shouldn't.

BTW, the 'competition' is not quite as straightforward as it would seem

In the event that all the tickets are not sold, the winner will be awarded a sum representing total receipts from ticket sales with a deduction for all reasonable costs and expenses in running the competition and for the charity donations which will be calculated on a pro-rata basis. Alternatively, the winner will have the option of paying a sum representing the shortfall in ticket sales and proceeding to the purchase of the property

In other words....the vendors can't lose....they either get their purchase price or they have their costs covered. It could mean though that your £25 'gamble' wins a lot less than a house if the tickets are not all sold. Seems slightly disingenuous to me :evil:

No I realise the competition is all in their favour! Oh well, gooid luck to them. I don't dispute the rights and wrongs of following planning law, I simply feel it was a sad and sorry sight to see such a lovely old property removed, however nice the new property. My belief is he got the property and land at a knockdown price as at the time their was a possible bypass 'blighting' its saleability - the by pass was canned (sadly for us, as would have put us right into a backwater!), so was a gamble that really paid off for him - can't blame him for that!

I've seen a number of these in the past few years - and am not aware that any of them have ever sold all the tickets and given the house away.

I'm not saying it is disingenous, just very very difficult to sell 120,000 £25 raffle tickets (even if the prize is a £3m house) in 12 months. That's 10,000 tickets a month or 328 every day.

In terms of a lottery - the odds per pound are about 3x better than the National Lottery on a Saturday, where £1 buys a 1 in 14m chance of something like £5m.

I agree - the house is impressive but horrible. Shame that the original cottage was lost.

with all the land in all the uk they decided to buy this bit and then demolish that lovely old house , a bit selfish if you ask me. then they put it up for sale? if it was a home for their family to grow up in then i might understand, basically they developed a lovely old house leaving nothing to show it ever existed in the first place. it was built a long long time before they were even thought of never mind born and has probably been through more than they will ever know , and they just wiped it off the face of the earth to make a few quid.
