Rope seal in doors in wood burner

Just a quick question, well, quick to type, maybe slower to answer!!

The 'rope' seals around the doors of our log burner are coming off, so we really need to replace. I'm assuming this is a job we could do. Is there a special heat resistant glue we should use? Ans indeed a special kind of 'rope'?

I had the same problem, and was able to get the glass rope, by the metre - together with the fire-proof glue in a tube - from my local farmers' co-op. Anywhere that sells woodburners should have it in stock, however. The rope comes in different thicknesses, so if you've got some of the old stuff handy, take it along to ensure that the new rope is thick enough to ensure a good seal.
It helps to give the door a really good going over with a wire brush to ensure the stuff sticks well.

I just did this. There are local sources for the rope and glue, but I couldn't get to one of them, so I bought a couple of metres of the right size rope and the glue from e(vil)Bay (between £1 and £1.50 per metre - search stove rope and then stove glue). The old rope had been squished, so I gently rolled part of it in my fingers until I could see what thickness it probably started as. The glue came in a little bottle, with a brush attached to the lid. I thought it would be useless, but it worked really well. Having pulled out the rope, I used an old blunt screwdriver to scrape away the old glue residue. I dabbed some glue on the cut end of the rope and rolled it between my fingers to stop the end fraying. Then I applied the glue, length by length. The rope held immediately, but I used masking tape to support it where necessary. When I got to the end, I cut the rope as needed and used the glue to stop it fraying. It was a quick easy job. (Then I read the glue instructions and it said not to get it on your skin. :roll: Oh well.)
