Hi,

What is the best way to fix this rotting roof timber? Are we ok to attach a piece of wood either side of the rotten bit and then fix those to the beam and the ridge pole, or do we need to replace the whole thing?

Also, how do you attach it the ridge pole, as I can't picture in my mind how its done, I suspect the others were put on before the felt and tiles were added.

Yes, put another alongside. I just had to do the same with one in my thatched roof that was eaten.
Treat it with woodworm killer first if there is any sign in the attic. Cuprinol 5-Star is good.

Your old one would have been fixed to the ridge by nailing from above. In an older roof it might have been pegged. Skew-nail the new one from the side.

Roofing felt is a nice-to-have rather than an essential. The tiles or whatever should be keeping the water out. Don't see how you can replace it without taking the roof off.

You can glue a length of felt under the holed section so as to still channel the water down to the eaves should the tiling fail. Its better to have it and not need it than to need it and find out it doesn't work.
