Hi,
We have a terraced, 1880's property which seems to have rising damp which we believe is due to the pavement and road, which was put in by the local authority a number of years ago, and which is higher than the interior floor level.
At some point, someone has raised the internal floor but only on the side with damp. They've put in a flimsy membrane. The floor is made up of a failing membrane, timber joists with concrete in-between and mdf floorboards on top.
We've had a contractor look at it and friends with renovation experience and have been advised to dig out the floor back to the original level, install new damp proof membrane up to 1mtr high along external walls, put in new timber frames and suspended timber floor with insulation.
Please be kind, but any advice would be greatly appreciated. Is this something we can do a lot of ourselves? Doing work outside is not an option. All the houses on this part of the street have the same problem and it would take years to get the council to do anything about the roads and pavements and we would end up with a worsening problem inside if we waited.
