Rim locks

Hello, I am in the process of stripping the many years worth of paint off an old victorian rim lock.
I wondered what was the best thing to use on it, after it has been stripped, to take it back to black?

Aye, Japan black is yer man - and if you can't find it, any high gloss black enamel will fit the bill; Humbrol or the like. Just make sure everything's grease-free first.

Stripping will get you back to the bare steel and brass. Then it's your choice of paint - any gloss will do over a suitable primer.
When I stripped my locks I used Hammerite smooth black to spray them up, first masking off the brass escutcheons. This has the advantage of not needing a primer, but it's high in volatiles and smells bad. Next time I might use a brush on enamel.

25-35% asphalt

pavement

and 10% linseed oil

with lead and iron based dryers,

car battery scrapings, rust

dissolved in 55% thinners (mineral spirits, turpentine substitute or naphtha).

The F-101 also had 1-3% of carbon black added as a pigment.

Voila, Pavement Black for the humble cottage.

It would work too, though the driers may not, so it may be slow to set.
