rim locks?

a lock that has no handle , and sits on the door rather than in it , is this still called a rim lock?
i am after a large rim type lock for my back door , but without handles. i also want one that looks like it belongs on a 100 year old plank and ledge cottage back door.
so , is it a rim lock that i am after, even though it cant have handles? or something else? and can someone point me in the right direction of a supplier of nice old ones or decent repros? salvage yards are asking stupid money for locks.

thank you penners , i have just been browsing that site , its really cheap compared to most ive seen.
when i say stupid money , that oak lock on page 2 in your link , there its 145 quid , most other places the same type of lock is from 3 to 4 hundred.

We used modern locks inside oak which has been rebated out and then screwed to the door with lock inside. The keeps were made by a local blacksmith.

They look very period but are modern secure locks.

I've done that in the past, too, Jon. Just planted an oak box on to a ledge and brace door, with a modern lock hidden inside it. The only thing it lacked was big, decorative key. I'd have loved something like this:

Most of the ones that you'll come across are "Rim Sash Locks", where they include the sprung latch to take a door knob. Sounds like what you're after is a "Rim Dead Lock" which is just the locking bolt only.

How about just a black enamel one? They come up second hand on Ebay quite often, admittedly finding a dead lock rather than sash lock will be difficult. Even new they're not expensive - this at £30 looks OK to me:-

Not "authentically old" but then again nothing will be unless you find a good reclaimed one, and this is sufficiently anonymous and not modern looking to blend in fairly well I reckon. You want something to suit a 100 year old door - my house is 110 years old and has the sash lock version of these everywhere, all original, they look just like the one on that link except with a bit of corrosion! Buying one then leaving it outside for a few months might help tone the "newness" down a bit?
