Rim lock lever handle

We have this lock on our front door


and unfortunately due to our reducing ability with advancing years to be able to grip the current handle and turn it, I think I need to replace the current knob with a lever handle.
However, I'm struggling to find the right replacement handle.

This sort of design here is readily available, but the size of the back plate is much too large for the available size of the rim lock.

Is there a name for the type of handle I'm looking for? Or, were lever handles never fitted to rim locks?

This is close to what I want, but is aluminum and apparently intended for a gate.

Any suggestions please either for the correct name of the thing I need, or where to find one?

Hi there, most/all door handles are mounted on a square section bar that operates as the spindle between the rimrock and the outer handle. Lever types seem to be commonly available. and I found a few that may be suitable at IronMongery World. I've attached a link to their website below.

Ah, perfect thank you. "Rose" appears to be the word I didn't know. The design I need seems to be a Lever on Rose type, not the more readily available ones with larger rectangular backplates.

I looked too. The problem seems to be that almost all lever handles are held on by some sort of backplate. The ones that look most appropriate are the 'on rose' ones. They seem to held to the door by the plate or rose and then the grub screw on the handle just goes into a groove to stop it rattling - not sure this would be secure enough to actually stop the handle from pulling off the rim lock side?

The bars on my old rim locks have holes (some threaded) that the grub screws go into.

A possible alternative could be an oval knob which would provide easier grip and some extra leverage...

On the lock side, you don't want any rose at all. You only want it on the other side of the lock.

I've never seen a lever used on a rim lock. You could get an "on rose" pair and modify one - you could take the rose off, grind down any bit that went into the rose, and bond a spindle into the lever with epoxy. Once set it just passes through the lock and you screw the rose on the non-lock side to the door.

The lever-with-rose kind has the holes for screwing to woodwork. It has nothing to hold it to the bar.
You could however easily modify one by simply gluing the bar permanently into the handle.
The rose in the picture link seems to be very small, so may not actually look out of place on your lock.

One point to bear in mind is that you obviously can't glue both sides, so would be dependent on the handle on the other side being attached with a pin through the bar rather than having a rose screwed to the door. Don't glue the lock end of the set up without checking the direction of the hole on the other end first, or you might only find you have to have the handle pointing up or down.

Even so, you have to consider which way the handle points. One way would clash with the key, if you are accustomed to leaving it in the lock, and the other way would perhaps look a bit odd.

I presume the bar has the standard diameter size? There is a smaller size commonly in use, and doubtless many variations in the past.

I think I'm going to buy a lever on rose pair and try to make them fit. The back plate of the rim lock is fairly solid, and in the photo it even shows two of three holes that look like they may previously have secured a rose, so maybe by using them or by drilling and tapping a couple of new ones I may be able to attach a rose with a couple of machine screws.
Or, as long as the square bar goes deep enough into the new lever handles, then I may be able to drill right through the handle and the square bar, and either tap a thread and insert a machine screw, or failing that maybe a roll pin.
The rose on the outside of the door can screw into the wood, so that should be fine.

I think it's worth a try.
