restoring stained marble

We have bought a house with a lovely white marble fireplace. Sadly, it is badly stained brown underneath the mantlepiece, (presumably by the coal fire some time ago). Does anyone know how we can treat the staining, preferably without dismantling the surround? Thank you

Hi

It sounds as if the acidic smoke residue has eaten into the marble, which is only limestone after all. Home cleaning will involve using acid to take away the surface - that generally is unsatisfactory as it also takes away the polish. If it doesnt come away with lemon juice (which is weak citric acid) I would suggest a call to a stone mason who will give advice and if necessary a price on grinding and re-finishing the surround.
