Restoring Cotswold Stone Floors

We recently purchased a Grade II cottage near Bath (circa 1450) with stone floors. The living room floors have carpet which we are removing, but the carpet has been glued to a rubber liner which is glued to the stone. The rubber liner appears to have been an attempt to curtail damp. With a lot of muscle and effort the carpet and liner comes up, but there is glue residual left on the stone and is tacky. How can this glue be removed? All DIY stores have no clue.

You're going to need elbow grease for starters, and plenty of it.

Alternatively try Nitromors (we swear by the green one), but try a little on a discrete area first, it may well dissolve the gunge and then act as a solvent and help the gunge soak further into the stone.

You could also try Ecover - the orange one is reported as being very good at removing bitumen-glue type of carpet gunge from stone floors. And it has the added bonus that it won't strip your skin/lining of your lungs like the harsher chemicals above.

Doctor power by JML - from Woolies - flourescent green tub - lather it up on a scotchbrite scrubber type thing, liberally apply to an area 1 foot to 18inch square and either scrub or, if the glue is thick, scrape off with paint scraper - I have successfully removed carpet glue from both porcelain and quarry tiles with this product.

If floor area is very big you might need 2 pots of product and 2 persons working it.

It leaves a little residue (like jif and ajax powder used to) but a good mopping afterwards will sort.

this stuff is also brilliant at removing the sticky label residue from new windows -one wipe and off it comes.

We ended up using the Strippers products NB-610 (2 part product mix)... still required a fair bit of elbow grease and hours on the knees and multiple wire brushes and scrappers. The floors are now fully stripped! Looking to seal or coat.

We are also using the Strippers product to remove layers of paint from stone walls in the house. It would be helpful to use their 'spray-vac' but it is too expensive for our smaller DIY project, so lots of sponge, soapy water and water. The people at Strippers are brilliant!
