Restoration and Fire

What is it about restoration and fires? Windsor Castle, Cutty Sark . . . and now this: http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/england/north_yorkshire/8435819.stm

Thankfully, that story has a happy ending, with no harm done, but it sounds like a near-miss for some irreplaceable heritage.

Ooh yes I heard that on R4, what a wonderful escape it had! It's kind of ironic that it was in for repair and the fire broke out in the repair workshop!

If I were Thomas Hardy, I'd write the most marvellous poem about it, sadly I'm not, so I can't.

It is the earliest piece of English art by a known artist, completed between 1405 and 1408 by John Thornton

its restoration is expected to take 10 years to complete.

3 years to make, 10 years to restore... I can understand why, it does make you wonder doesn't it?

So much slower to restore than to make from scratch - another irony.

I'm slightly concerned that that article tells the world how much it's worth then mentions it's in the school hall. :shock:
