Hi all.
First post here - more to follow I'm sure!
I'm currently renovating a tired late 18th century house. Walls are sandstone construction (inner/outer decent stones, rubble filled centre with larger "through" stones here and there). The wall in question is west facing and gets most of the weather, about 750mm thick and has been painted with multiple layers of white paint over the years prior to me buying the property. I wanted to take the wall back to stone, repoint with lime mortar etc, so arranged for it to be blasted. After the guys had finished the result was.... a bit nasty to say the least. They referred to what was underneath (and couldn't be blasted off) as a "cement wash" - possibly a rudimentary attempt at weather proofing back in the day? It's like a muddy coloured thin slurry - won't come off with blasting as I said, or be removed easily by mechanical means (last pic shows my builder trying to chip away at it).
I've attached some pics. I'm considering rendering the wall but am keen to establish what this "cement wash" actually is before going down the wrong path - for example, if it is cement, is there any point lime rendering over it if breathability is already compromised? There are almost certainly other questions I don't even know to ask.
Would appreciate your thoughts.
Cheers
Mark
