Repointing limestone walls

Afternoon all,

Onto the next part of the house (while it's summer).

We need to repoint our external walls, I've read pro/cons for using NHL3.5 for this.

Can somebody please confirm if I should use this stuff or not? If not, what should I use? Seems to be so much confusing info on the net.

My misunderstanding of lime mortar

I'm still building my wall very slowly using NHL3.5 because that's what the local builders merchants have. I've just knocked off a reference brick used to align the rest of the wall because I put it in the wrong place. I placed the brick 2 or 3 weeks ago but the mortar was still soft like...

NHL 3.5 can be a bit too hard for some of the softer stones.

It depends on what bricks you have really (age of house, etc). There have been reports that the softer grade NHL mortars can become considerably harder over time. It might be worth exploring a lime putty based option. Its worth noting to remove any doubt as to what your house was actually built with you can get your mortar analysed but its not cheap.
