Replacing a grotty porch

I have the CO's permission to take down my breeze block and tiled awfully ugly porch from my 18thC listed Cottage in Shaftesbury. He suggested though that I might 'miss it' and could replace it with a feather board one. The earliest pic I have of the cottage is in `1930's when ..there was no porch. I quite like the idea of this but am interested to know PPUK peeps thoughts. Any ideas what might look best - simplicty seems to work best in this cottage - it rejects fussiness.All comments welcome.

Porches are really usefull in keeping the winter out. I wouldn't get rid of the old one before working out how to replace it.

We are having this debate at the moment. Do we remove the 1970's porch and return to what is a georgian front or keep the useful cover that the porch provides.

Winter is coming, so we are keeping the porch....

Next spring another decision well may be made!!!

If you are not too sure about the idea of a fully enclosed porch, the thing to build is a canopy type porch, it gives shelter to the entrance and would be more appropriate for an old cottage.

Simply built, out of green oak and left unpainted to weather over time, with similar roof cover as the main roof.

This simple and effective arrangement would also look good on old stone cottages.

How about a 4" concrete wall porch with wavy walls to increase rigidity and stability, topped with an inflated polythene roof with eye-pleasing opposing curves and suntrap effect? No? Ok then.

You could always replace the porch with an old fishing boat fitted around the door.
You'd have to start smoking a pipe and chew tobacco though.

Lizzy - I subscribe to the "are you sure" point-of-view. If you take down the porch and don't replace it, I reckon you'll notice a real difference in the warmth of the house.

Does your front door open into a hallway, or directly into a room? If the latter, I really wouldn't be without a fully enclosed porch.

Can you post a picture of the house with porch?

Hi All and thansk for the comments. Sadly no pics as the technology is a bit beyond me and I haven't got a camera!

I really do like the idea of the green oak canopy weathering to a silvery grey.....mmmm

The front door opens directly into the living room containing a Wood burner in the Inglenook so it gets very warm in there - also should tell you the cottage is tucked away behind a (concrete) 4 foot high wall which kind of surrounds the front of the cottage (used to be red brick till some twit decided to render it)

The current porch is truly horrid and teh windows on teh sides are falling out (i was quoted £300 to replace them and figured better to demolish the porch given the CO suggested i could) and spend teh money on a better first impression!
