Replacement windows

Yet again I've had a windows salesman knock on my door trying to sell me double glazing. His first question " Do you have Double Glazing", Me " Yes all of the back is double glazed bar one window". His observation " Your front windows need replacing", Me "No they don't" (They have secondary double glazing which he failed to see). Him " If they are more than five years old then they need replacing". Me "They are over 200 years old and can the ones you are trying to replace them with survive that long?" He left.

We’ve never had anyone cheeky enough to knock at our door offering replacement windows though we used to get regular telephone calls. I would tell them that the house is listed and ask if they would handle the LBC process as part of the deal. That usually ended the conversation.

We used to get them fairly regularly - usually a bored looking youth clearly on commission only. Some of them weren't short on hopeless optimism though, once they'd given up trying to flog me plastic windows they'd try plastic fascia boards. Ohhh, yes please, take down those perfectly good original / painstakingly replicated decorative Victorian boards that are clearly in great condition and replace them with thin shiny white plastic :roll:

I wouldn't care but it's one of the few jobs that I actually *have* finished here! :lol:

The mainstream logic for new windows is terrible for the environment. It is almost never possible to look up the energy used to manufacture something, but a lot of the cost will boil down to energy and the payback on energy savings is invariably overestimated by several times. The energy used in manufacture and the lifetime of the new windows must surely be significant.

This short term thinking is also built into legislation (if you happen to have given up on a change of use). Sure we'll be carbon neutral by 2050 and feeling smug, but there will be whole load of boats coming in from China to allow that.
