Replacement timber casement windows for Welsh cottage

Hi all,

I've not been around for some time as we've been busy with our new home, a 400 year old (non listed) stone cottage in SW Wales

Some of you may recall we were buying a repossession - well, we're four months in and loving life here although till today we had no flushing toilet and are camping out upstairs while DIYing the building work downstairs :roll: We also have no broadband or TV, which could be a good thing I guess. We recently had a borehole drilled and have been taming the extensive gardens/grounds, having so far planted well in excess of a hundred perennials, shrubs and trees, including over forty David Austin roses - thank goodness the weather has been kind!

Wood burners/multi fuel stoves are now in and currently we're having a new boiler fitted. Pip will be fitting a new sunroom roof and we'll be doing the kitchen soon - I hope, as I'm missing homemade roast potatoes, lol!

Anyway, we also need to replace two large and very hideous 1960s windows with more appropriate timber casements. We had a quote locally that was crazily expensive and I was wondering if anyone here could recommend a good joiner in the SW Wales (Llandeilo/Carmarthen) area - or even a good national company - please? Otherwise I guess Pip will have to add those to his lengthy 'To do' list!

Usually makes his windows in sapele, but will use whatever you wish, has made some windows for us in accoya.

Mimms sounds very lovely and I'd like to see what 40 roses in a garden looks like, did you go for mix of ramblers etc, what varieties, I have a real thing about roses. We had two small dormer casements made when we lived in Warwickshire and they were £500 each incl. fitting but that was some time ago.

I am in Cornwall a Twig would you mind pming me also with your Cornish joiner details I am after having some shutters made for bathroom.

If your after fruit trees to plant we used Dolau-Hirion, Capel Isaac, they have a great range, and good quality (www.applewise.co.uk)

As for a joiner, we used Tim Wade (KArdos Joinery), he made all our box Sash windows ( a little scatty, but lovely chap)

As a supplement, I don't know what you might regard as exorbitant, but five casement windows, Accoya, each about 3 x 2ft, came in around £5,000.
Plus fitting.

The 24 sealed units, Histoglass, 11mm with hand-drawn glass, will be about £3,500.

Byng Joinery used to do the various trade shows. I got a quote from them once which was very reasonable. They are supply only I believe so you would need to find a local fitter. They deliver nationally..

How extremely rude of me not to have responded to all your helpful suggestions for replacement windows over a year ago....I'm truly very sorry!

We've had all sorts of issues - but mainly of the internet and car variety - still not totally resolved, but better! Pip has also been busy setting up what started out as a handyman business, but has morphed into landscape gardening, lol!

Anyway, as a result whilst we've made some progress on the cottage front, we've yet to sort the windows.

In response to Ivor's reference to price, the quote we had last year was £2k per window (double glazed) not including the glass, which obviously added considerably to the overall total. I've misplaced the quote and can't recall the glazing cost. They don't fit, Pip would do that.

So, having left it this late in the year, we're hoping to try to get the windows made/fitted before Christmas (2019, lol!) as last winter they leaked like sieves, and will be contacting the companies/joiners recommended here for quotes asap.
