Replacement roof

Hi my house is grade 2 listed. The roof will need renewing at some stage, believe it's asbestos slate tiles thou may be wrong. Apart from asking a roofer what tiles could be used when renewed?
Another question our house was built sometime before 1633 - that is the date it was made 2 storey. The house attached is not listed and about 100 old. The landlords may want to develop the land it sits on may look to knock it down once the current tennant is no longer Would they be allowed to bulldoze a house adjoining our house?

It would probably help to know what part of the country the house is located in terms of local roofing materials. I'm not sure when asbestos was first used but I'm doubting it was around when your house was first built so I'm assuming the roof is not original to the house. I'd guess that some sort of similar (but non-asbestos,) slate would be suitable for a new roof but the only person who can give you definitive answers to those two questions will be the local council conservation/historic buildings officer. I'm pretty sure you'll require Listed Building Consent for such a major change to the house so it would be a good idea to make contact with him/her to discuss things.

I don't think houses the age of yours would have had a slate roof unless it is built within close proximity of a slate quarry.

Dunno about your roof question but on a general level I'd really recommend getting to know your local Conservation Officer, if you have a helpful one.
They might be a bit 'meh' on the phone but your council may offer free pre-application advice like ours does. Filling in a form innocently asking if we could put a pipe through a daub panel had our CO round our house like a rat up a drainpipe and then we collared him with all the questions we really wanted to ask;-) Obvs we kept it all nice and polite and respectful an' all

Asbestos slates are fine, if the roof is watertight and not unsightly, just leave it alone.

If the roof ever needs renewing, before you start take a good look at the dimensions and condition - woodworm etc - of rafters and supporting structure. One merit of asbestos is that it's light. A slated roof would have to carry perhaps twice the weight, and a house originally thatched, for instance, may have beams which are perfectly adequate for thatch (or asbestos) but much too flimsy to support slate or tile.

As regards the demolition, it depends on what's there and what might replace it. Planning law is supposed to take account of any detrimental effect on the setting of a listed property, but in practice this is often ignored. The CO is potentially your friend here.
