Replacement Double Glazing - It's the law

The other day a salesman from Amber Windows http://www.amberwindows.net/ called at my door saying
"I know it's probably the last thing on your mind at the moment but have you considered replacement Double Glazing?"
"yes you're right it is the last thing on my mind" Well they are the original sash still with original glazing.
After a couple of bouts of too-ing and fro-ing he came out with
"Well it is going to be law that everyone has to change their old windows for Double Glazing"
I asked if he was sure about that and he assured me it was so. I then challenged him on this point and asked whether that was what he was saying to people. He then back peddled by saying that it's only suggested that that's what people do. So I continued with "well why are you telling me it's going to be law then" but by now he was half way up the street shouting back to me "it's only suggested, it's only suggested...". but he never said it was "only suggested", until challenged.

Needless to say I'll be contacting his company and Trading Standards to alert them to his sales technique.
(obviously one must assume that this particular salesman is a one off bad apple and that this type of sales patter is not tolerated, endemic or indeed condoned at Amber Windows or within the replacement window industry)

Well, I have to say I did read the other day that yet again we are to have new and even more stringent building regs ... anyone carrying out refurb work will possibly have to 'upgrade' everywhere else too... but I didn't dwell as it only upsets me.

Amber Windows, eh? Be interested to hear what Trading Standards say.

well presumably he's cottoned onto a snippet of possible legislation and extended it into a law to cover every property in the Kingdom!

A couple of weeks ago someone pulled up outside our house and made the astute observation that the render was in need of repair. (Some of it was in a wheelbarrow at the time) He had an excellent new product that would prevent any damp, not need painting, ever, and was breathable too. I explained that we had to have lime render, and he said yes, they could do that as well.
A company rep called us back that evening. They were willing to lime render, but only if they could spray it afterwards with their plastic resin based paint. He had a pretty poor opinion of conservation officers, and when I told him how good ours had been with advice, he hung up. A shame. If they really have got Gore-tex in a tin the rabbit's hutch could do with repainting.

Good for you. I hope the guy gets the book thrown at him. What gets me fired up is thinking about the number of little old ladies who have undoubtedly been fed the same message, and probably believed it. It's outrageous!

I'm the one who can't get a builder because they try to con me and I know of little, old and large, young people who would fall for such marketing.

I'm not completely sure where the bananas fit in, PM, but I was using the generic "little old lady" to represent those in our society who are perhaps more vulnerable to the "advice" of double glazing "consultants" than the likes of BMcD and me.

I've lived in my house for 18 years now.
When I moved in the original windows were in a dreadful state but under a layer of a century of paint the wood was good for the most part.
A few months spent cleaning and repairing and they looked and worked as good as new.
My next door neighbour at the time thought I was nuts.
The following year he had double glazing put in costing £1000s. The people directly opposite did so too.
My windows are being repainted this year again (third time now) but nextdoor had their double glazing replaced again last year.
Today the people opposite are having the double glazing being replaced again too.

Absolutely right. And I have little sympathy with those who are foolish proactively.

My concern is for the LOLs who are bamboozled into foolishness by unscrupulous salesmen.
