Replacement cast iron mantle shelf??

Hello,

I need to find a replacement 48" (or slightly shorter) mantle shelf for a late Victorian cast iron combination fireplace, the original having long since gone missing.

I can only find 1 supplier of a steel replacement:-

That one is OK, but not quite right - anyone know of any others? I have heard of people making their own from timber and then blackening them with grate polish, but if I can get something "off the shelf" (pun intended!) then so much the better, as I'm not sure a timber one would ever look that convincing.

I have made a replacement fire basket for a decorative cast iron fire place. Its very effective. To make a replacement out of wood, use birch plywood, you will need a router for the edge mouldings spray the finished filled and sanded job with a matt black "heat proof" engine paint rattle can from a car accessory shop. The only problem that I can forsee are the fixings, from memory the metal mantlepieces are only fixed at the back the whole jobbie being cantilevered out over the uprights.
