Repairing a Stone Staircase

I would be very grateful if anyone could guide me.... We have a wonderful stone staircase which has had a carpet glued on to it, treads put onto it and holes made for a stairlift. We very much want to restore it and are finding it very hard to find anyone or any ideas! Can you help/

Removing the glue should be relatively easy. I'd ask your local stonemasons to come and have a look....where in the country are you?

hi, i would take care before you remove the glue, as this can some times cause other problems. eg staining.. try a small test patch and use soft material to help remove.

pipdl - glue should be removable with the correct solvent. Just be sure that you don't exacerbate the problem by spreading the glue around the stone even more.

Thank you so much everyone for replying. I was so hopeless with my computer that I have only just found a way back onto the site! I have now removed the carpet and it looks fabulous although has got dirty again because of weeks of plumbers heavy boots. I wonder if anyone has an idea of how I might seal the stone so it doesn't get discoloured again? Thanks so much. I am going to post about the curved Georgian wall now.

pipdl - do you know what kind stone it is? A photo would help.

I called out some stonemasons for mine - which from the sounds of it has had similar abuse to yours pipdl. It was a conservation minded company and they said chipping away to make smooth, or chipping out and adding in, was not good conservation practice. Basically, they said either put up with it as is or just cover with new stone treads and risers, for which they quoted £4k.

It's diffcult to know what to suggest for yours without seeing pictures and knowing what kind of stone it is, as the other posts have suggested.

As for sealing, I had tremendous success with Liberon stone sealer on my 200 yr old Ancaster stone floor - it was very porous and the sealer, which is mainly oily, had to be poured in in copious quantities, three times, and then finished with 3 coats of Liberon wax. I'm sure that alternative products would have had similar results as the main thing is lifting dirt, using oil, followed by wax.
