Repair split in wooden door

I've been trying to get a match for the existing doors in the house, but unfortunately the specific door I need is an odd size. The only one I can find appears to be this one on-line, but at an eye watering price and with a great split down the middle.

Whilst I recover from the price, I'm wondering whether this can actually be repaired without disassembling the whole door. It'll end up being painted, so doesn't need to be pretty, but does anyone have any suggestions as to how I might actually be able to 'fill' or repair the split?

If you are painting the doors then I would get in touch with a couple of local joiners. That is a very basic door that they could knock up for you no problems, in any size you like. I would expect the price to be about the same, maybe a bit more but it would be just as you want it with no splits to worry about

I agree with Craig - if painting then why not go new?

The only way I can see to properly repair that split is to remove the beading, which would stand a high risk of breaking it - to get the panel out to glue it together properly and ensure it's free to move (which may well be why it split in the first place). It's a lot of money for a door that's not in good condition as well.

If you really wanted that door and didn't want to remove the beading, all I can think of would be to cover over the panels with the thinnest ply you could get away with prior to painting, but it wouldn't be my favoured option and even when painted I suspect the repair would be noticeable.

Thank you both! I guess I shall just have to move on and keep scouring the reclamation yards. Unfortunately I'm unable to find a supplier of 'new' doors and the cheapest I've found someone to make one is £333 Surrey Pricing! :shock:

Hi There,
Since the ownership of English Salvage changed a few years back their asking prices have increased significantly. It's worth noting though that everything is negotiable and you may be able to push the price down to something more acceptable - a couple of years back I purchased a small Belfast type Lab sink from them after getting them to take better than 50% off their asking price.

Its worth remembering too that, given your location, post and packaging could be very costly too.

As to repair; its possible but you would have to rely on a glued joint to make the repair. Such panels are typically very thin and there is no way I know of to introduce something to strengthen the joint that would not spoil the appearance. That said though it may be possible to reduce the frame width to apply some compressive force on each side of the panel.

In my opinion, if the existing door is beyond repair I would look to Salvage years nearer to home - the door pattern you are looking for is fairly common.

I wonder if the reclaimed door panels were split as a result of the stripping process itself?

We have an old panelled door where the panel had split due, I'm fairly convinced, to the many layers of paint preventing the panels from moving and threfore not being able to adjust to seasonal variations in temperature and (probably more importantly) humidity. Fortunately the split was quite small so I just filled it with a two-part filler (https://www.screwfix.com/p/ronseal-high-performance-wood-filler-natural-1kg/33986) and repainted over. This has been fairly successful although a hairline crack does betray the position of the original split, so the door is clearly still trying to move with the seasons.

Prices on the website start from £220 for oak but I e had pine doors made by them for a lot less if you give them a call.

I see that pine door is sold, someone must have been desperate. The panel was split where it was joined. The panels were often not one piece, they were about quarter inch thick and tongued/glued together. As has been said, if the panel cannot move in the frame, it will often split. Later doors had ply panels which do not split, just the normal movement cracks around the edge.

In glued panels, the glue line is thin and easily impaired by dipping. I would never buy a commercially stripped door.

Thanks for this but I think theres a case of mistaken identity here somewhere.

I'm currently not looking for anything specific from the yards, albeit that the First Lady and I are frequent visitors to many such establishments, but I will look into what Castle Reclamation have to offer - the Outlaws live near Bath so it would give me a good excuse to disappear for a few hours. :evil:

Sorry I think it was Parkview after the doors! Have fun a Castle Rec if you do visit though! Make sure you go up stairs in the barn at the back of the yard, there’s lots of goodies hidden up there.

They also have a second yard hidden down a lane with stone, bricks and bulkier items in.
