repair/replace flashings

in my on-going efforts to reduce the damp in this house, we are working on step 1 which is to stop rain coming in! - Already modified next doors drainpipe so water actually goes down the drain.. not into the earth by our house...
anyway - when it was really peeing down the other day, himself went into attic with a torch to see where its coming in, and clean water is running down the outside of the chimney breasts. think I can see why the joists were rotten in this areas now... So we have a roofer coming to give us a quote to deal with the flashings, as I assume thats the problem

is there anything i should think of regarding a period property and flashings?

Make sure your roofer is a proper roofer who will remove and then replace the slates using nails and copper or lead tingles, and not merely use gobs of silicone. All too many roofers now resort to the ubiquitous skeleton gun-and-goo technique, which will ruin the slates/tiles.
To have proper flashing done isn't cheap, but it is worth it. Whereabouts are you in the UK?
