Repainting metal guttering

I am finally getting around to a job I bought the materials for about 3 years ago which is to repaint the metal 'Ogee' gutter at the front of our house.

I can't remember if it is made of aluminium or galvanised steel, it is corroded in places where the original paint has peeled off in large strips.

At the time I did some research and bought Hammerite special metals primer (water based), Sikkens Rubbol Satura plus (oil based), and the matching Sikkens Rubbol Primer Plus (oil based) it will be stripped/scraped/sanded to get a good clean surface.

I also can't remember if I was intending to use both primers - can anybody advise on the best method/materials for priming/painting metal guttering? at the time I couldn't really find anything other than the Hammerite stuff, I'm open to any suggestions that will achieve a long lasting finish.

I did mine in around year 2000
These were cast iron type gutters
I had them all on the ground dismantled as I was putting putting new brackets which had rusted to be beyond hope
This made things all much easier:

The gutters themselves...
Wash and then clean down with sanding disc fitment on an angle grinder to remove all loose bits of paint etc.
Apply Anti-rust solution as an where needed - Hammerite kurust
International's red oxide primer
Standard Dulux solvent based undercoat
Standard Dulux solvent based gloss top coat

Hi There,

If there is rust on the surface of the metal it will be steel and the galvanised plating will have failed in places to permit the corrosion.

Please be Aware If you intend sanding these be sure to wear a mask at all times and keep other people out of the way while you're doing this as there are serious health risks particularly when the old zinc plating gets hot.

If the paint is breaking away or has simply blistered and the underlying metal has a rough texture its probably aluminium, but could also be copper. Either way they can be very delicate and rough handling can break them or the fittings they depend on so best to be cautious if you intend to remove them from the building to do the paint work.

Regarding the paint itself; you probably will only need to use the Sikken Primer and Finish Coat paints. If you wish you could use the Hammerite as a base primer to the bare metal but it would be a good idea to try the paints out together on a small area to make sure they do not react to each other before committing to the full job.

I would use the 121 on both sides of the gutter, but it's a two-pack and a bit of a faff to apply.

When you put the gutter back, be sure to paint the fixings thoroughly or they will rust as well. For joining the sections, I used stainless nuts, bolts & washers, and left them unpainted.

But once it's all been painted with this stuff you will never have to do it again.

Thanks all for the replies.

Unfortunately I won't be taking the guttering down, this year it will be an in-situ repaint to improve the appearance.

I have plans to take it down for a full refurb at some point but as the gutter runs behind the upper parapet it will be difficult to remove and will need scaffolding, and possibly some of the lower slates removing depending on how difficult it is to slide a section of the gutter out.

Cubist that is a very good point, I will test the special metals primer with the sikkens beforehand to make sure it doesn't react.

Oh dear, it looks like nearly a year since I last set out to do this job, and several months since I last visited this site

My job has been crazy busy for the last year so there's lots of threads here for me to catch up on!

At least this weekend I climbed up there and found that the gutters are definitely cast aluminium. They have oxidised quite badly in some places, pushing off the original paint underneath all the later coats.

If anyone has any tips for painting aluminium I would be grateful. I will be removing loose paint and sanding in situ - is there anything that can be done to prevent/slow the aluminium oxidising underneath the new coat of paint, or is it something I'll just have to live with?

Yes, some jobs take a long time.
I have a list which is probably more years longer than me.

The paint is only peeling because it was not properly primed.
Once it's done correctly, it's done.

The challenge up there will be getting all the old paint off. Much better when you can take it all down, but at least it's light and easy compared to cast iron.
