Hi all. I am a first time poster looking for lead paint-related advice from experienced renovators and/or decorating specialists. Thanks.
I live in a victorian semi built in 1880. I want to renovate the staircase which, at the moment, seems to be coated in many layers of yellowing gloss paint. My concern is that one or some of the layers will be lead-based paint which will polute our air when sanded or stripped. I have three children including a six week old baby so i don't want to take any risks!
The stairs will eventually be carpeted so i just need to work on the spindles, newell posts (2), the hand rails and the bit underneath the newell posts. All but the handrails are going to be painted in eggshell and I would like the handrails to be stripped and varnished.
Does anyone have any idea how I (or someone that I pay) could do this safely? I have thought about using the liquid sander and even dismantling the parts and having them dipped. Lots of websites that I have looked at don't seem to mention the lead paint risk so I'm not sure if I am over-reacting or whether they are just turning a blind eye!
Thanks for any advice.
Sarah
