Looking at the exterior of my property, I want to tart it up a bit with the intention of rendering (in lime) at some point. If I use a couple or three coats of limewash, will there be any problems with putting render on over the top in a year or so time ?
So long as it's a lime render then i cannot see a problem
You would of course need to check for loose or flacking limewash ,and any blown render underneath.
I have a lime rendered and limewashed exterior wall. The job was done 4 years ago, and the render has blown in a few places.
The limewash is pretty good, so shouldnt need too much tidying...a stiff brush should find any loose bits
The plan is to hack off the loose render, scrub off any loose/flacking limewash, and then patch/render over, and limewash again.
Limewash and lime render should play nicely if the limewash is sound (and ideally don't add linseed or similar to the limewash if you know you're going to be asking render to stick to it at a later date)
I guess the important question is what's under the limewash?
Ground floor is cavity wall with facing bricks of Norfolk Reds (a very soft, friable brick) and modern flettons on the 1970s extension. The upper half is sold brick (double thickness) with what looks like a cement render & pebbledash finish - This is original from when the house was built back in 1929.
The rendered part has had a multitude of coatings over the years ranging from limewash to a masonry paint - The long term is to chisel off the pebbledash, if needs be, back to brick, and then a smooth render over the top. I've got a hankering for a crisp flat and sparkly white finish.
